Building the Foundation for an Academic Career

For Xinting Zhen, research and teaching are the twin pillars supporting success in her academic career. She credits her doctoral studies and faculty mentors at Stuart School of Business with launching her on her current path.

ā€œThe Ph.D. program in management science and analytics prepared me with rigorous training in quantitative studies, including corporate finance, statistics, econometrics, and asset pricing,ā€ Zhen says. ā€œThe curriculum and courses helped me build comprehensive knowledge about both theoretical and empirical finance.ā€

Zhen has already compiled an impressive research record. She was selected by the editorial team of the journal Managerial Finance as a Highly Commended Award winner in the 2018 Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards for her dissertation, titled ā€œThree Essays in Financial Institutions and Corporate Finance.ā€

She also has collaborated with Stuart Professor of Finance Haizhi Wang, her doctoral adviser, and other co-authors on three published papersā€”ā€œBanking Deregulation and Investment-Cash Flow Sensitivityā€ in Review of Business (forthcoming 2021), ā€œBank Market Power and Loan Contracts: Empirical Evidenceā€ in Economic Notes (2017) and ā€œWhom You Borrow from Matters: Universal Banks and Firm Innovationā€ in Managerial Finance (2019).

ā€œMy sincere gratitude goes to my adviser, Dr. Haizhi Wang, and all faculty at Stuart for motivating me to pursue my dream in the field of finance,ā€ says Zhen.
