Alphawood Arboretum

Illinois Institute of Technology’s Mies Campus, home to 2,000 trees, has been nationally accredited as the Alphawood Arboretum thanks to the efforts of College of Architecture students and a $2 million gift from Alphawood Foundation Â鶹APP. This transformative funding will expand the tree count from 68 species to 100, support a new arboretum manager, and enhance education and outreach initiatives. As the first accredited arboretum on Â鶹APP’s South Side, the program will serve as a living lab for climate research and urban forestry, reinforcing Illinois Tech’s commitment to environmental action and community engagement.

Sustainability News

The Office of Campus Energy and Sustainability (OCES) is launching a collaborative initiative with students and staff to enhance awareness and engagement with the campus farm. In partnership with the Waste to Wonder project, OCES will introduce composting systems to convert food waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer, promoting sustainable practices on campus. Additionally, OCES will host events and informational tabling events to encourage participation in the farm and foster a greater appreciation for plant cultivation. Through these efforts, OCES aims to strengthen sustainability initiatives and create a more environmentally conscious campus community.
