When a contested social or political issue arises that does not directly concern the academic mission of Illinois Tech, institutional leadership, as well as academic departments, will not issue a position statement on that issue. If an issue arises that directly affects the mission of Illinois Tech (e.g., proposed government action regarding admissions policy, curriculum, or student visas) institutional leaders may issue statements about the significance of that issue to the university.
There may also be occasions where some members of the university community take strong public positions that result in public confusion as to whether the members are speaking for the university. In those cases, it may be appropriate for institutional leadership to make a public statement indicating that the members do not speak for the university.
