Policy No. C. 4.00

Date of Issue 7/2/2014

Date of Update 6/13/2023

4.01

There are ten official paid holidays each year for eligible non-union employees.

New Year's Day
Martin Luther King Day
Memorial Day
Juneteenth Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

In addition to these federal holidays, the university establishes additional days as university holidays. Two of these are established in each year’s holiday schedule and the remainder are used between Christmas Day and New Year’s day each year when the university is closed. Click here to see a list of the current year's holidays.

4.02

All full-time employees will be given the official, paid holidays off with straight time pay to a maximum of 7.75 hours per holiday. Eligible part-time employees will be paid a pro-rated share of 7.75 hours if the holiday occurs on a regularly scheduled work day.

4.03

Non-exempt employees, not covered by a collective bargaining agreement, who are required to work on an official, paid holiday, will be compensated at one-and-one-half times his/her regular hourly rate of pay for all hours worked.

4.04

An employee must have worked in the payroll period in which the official, paid holiday occurs to be paid for such holiday unless the employee is on approved vacation or paid sick leave.

4.05

Early Departure:

Eligible employees are permitted to leave work three (3) hours prior to their scheduled end of shift on the workday immediately preceding certain university holidays, subject to the approval of the employee’s supervisor. Please see the program guidelines for additional information regarding eligibility and scheduling below.

Only full-time non-union staff are eligible to participate in the Early Departure for Holidays program. Union employees are governed by the applicable provisions of the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.

  • Employees who are on a performance improvement plan are not eligible to participate.
  • Part-time employees are not eligible to participate.

Guidelines

  • Early Departure applies only to the holidays listed in the university’s official holiday calendar.
  • Employees must be scheduled to work the full day on the early closure day in order to be eligible, and this benefit may not be combined with any Paid Time Off
  • Early Departure is considered paid time and does not require employees to use vacation or other accrued leave balances.
  • Supervisors are responsible for ensuring adequate coverage in operational areas. Employees in essential services or roles requiring on-site presence may be excluded from participation at the discretion of their supervisor.
